Changing Tides

Scenes from an early morning walk just after high tide and the same locations mid afternoon at low tide. The recent full moon has created higher and lower tides than usual.

Fritillaries in the Nunnery

Snake's Head Fritillary (top photo) is one of my favourite spring flowers found in the ruins of the nunnery on Iona. This is the only place I have found these flowers on the island and this year they came out about two weeks ago.

Port Ban

Port Ban is a beautiful sheltered beach on the west side of Iona.
See that dark cloud to the west....that's what brought the rain followed by frozen white hailstones! Less than half an hour after taking the photo the weather changed drastically. An hour later and the sun was out again!

Pretty in Pink

Thrift flowers opening to the sun on the rocks at the north beach.

Clear and Cold!

Sunday afternoon at the White Strand of the Monks. One of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

The Village Street

A photo taken while waiting for the 9am ferry. Sunshine again today!

Loch Stonaig

Not far from Columba's Bay is Loch Stonaig, which used to provide drinking water for the island.
(Now the water supply is piped from the island of Mull.)

Does it get any better?!?

Another afternoon at the beach and the sand is actually warm now!

Spring is in the Air!

A glorious day of sunshine here on Iona! I wore sandals for the first time this year!

The Bay at the Back of the Ocean

A day of sunshine for hikng, exploring the west side of the island and even a little paddling (with my feet, that is, but just for a few minutes!).

Sunday 4 April 2010

Alleluia

Easter Sunday at Iona Abbey... the cross carried around the island on Good Friday now stands in the cloisters, transformed by daffodils into a riot of colour and life.

Saturday 3 April 2010

Sunshine and Sandcastles!

A castle decorated with limpet shells narrowly escapes being taken by the tide.

Standing Stones

Some days the blue of the sea and sky could not be more perfect. A generous sprinkling of fresh snow on the hills of Mull and a large dollop of sunshine. What more could anyone ask for?
